Modern Shaker Homes's home packages are specially sized to be constructed by two novice carpenters with minimal tools and equipment. Yet its strong, interlocking, timber frame-style system exceeds the strength and durability of today's stick-built homes. And its energy-efficient, well-insulated design provides comfortable temperatures while slashing utility bills.

No experience? No problem! Our building instructions walk a beginner through the building process from beginning to end. And because the frame is made with every piece sized for one to two people to carry, there are limits on the height and width of each structure. This also makes for a much safer - and quieter - building site. No cranes or heavy equipment needed.

How long does it take to build? Approximately one hour per square foot to build. A 1250-square-foot house should take around 1250 hours to build. If two people work 25 hours each per weekend, it should take around 25 weekends to complete.

  • Reach out by phone or email so we can review your project and answer initial questions.

  • Once you choose a home and we confirm project viability, we’ll send a contract outlining the package price. A deposit secures your place.

  • We refine the design together, then deliver stamped plans ready for permitting.

  • When construction is ready to begin, the remaining balance is submitted and your home package and instructions are delivered on your timeline.

  • Project management support is available as needed throughout the build.

  • Engineer-stamped plans that conform to your local code and site, plus instructions that are simple enough for a novice carpenter.

  • Lumber to construct sills, posts, beams, and rafters, plus metal roof and fasteners.

  • Three-quarter inch, tongue-and-groove wood paneling for walls, treads, risers, and stringer for stairs (if applicable), and one and one-half inch wood decking for floors (if applicable).

  • Low U-value, double pane, double hung, vinyl frame windows (upgrades available), insulated exterior doors, and solid wood interior doors.

  • House wrap as vapor barrier and low-VOC foam board insulation for walls and roof.

  • Three-quarter inch, rough sawn wood siding.

  • Cabinets with industrial-grade furniture board drawers, solid wood drawer fronts, and six-way adjustable, fully concealed hinges.

  • Lumber and instructions for assembly.
